Escape the 9-to-5

The janitor often escapes
before the doctor.

Rat Race is a family board game that teaches real financial literacy through play. Draw your job, take your lap, and build passive income until it covers your expenses — and you are free. Assets set you free, not salary.

The board and your rivals — Rat Race: Money Board Game

How it works

Draw your job, then buy your way out

1

Draw your job

Janitor, teacher, doctor — each with its own salary, expenses and starting balance. The big salary is not the advantage it looks like.

2

Take the lap

Paydays, tempting doodads, and investment deals: rental properties, small businesses and stocks with real market swings.

3

Buy your way out

Assets put money in your pocket every month. When passive income covers your expenses, you are out of the rat race.

The lesson

A big salary is a bigger cage.

The doctor starts with the highest income and the highest expenses, so every doodad costs more and the bar to clear is further away. The janitor needs less passive income to be free, and gets there first. One game and most players — including the kids — understand assets versus liabilities better than they did an hour earlier.

Impulse buys, car loans and the 10%-a-month bank loan trap, with a bankruptcy rule that teaches the spiral without anyone losing real money.
